As I approach the 5th pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, I note that I'm taking the Camino Portugues for the first time. I'll be detouring into Fatima to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima.
Because I've been to Fatima and Portugal before, I thought some background might be in order.
I first visited Portugal and Fatima in 2007. My parents, my ex-partner, and I visited Lisbon during a European trip and we made a side visit to Fatima. Then once again, in 2015, I took my parents to a month long roadtrip around Spain. We visited Lourdes, France and the principality of Andorra. We then drove from St Jacques Pied-de-Port beside the Camino de Santiago, walking parts of it here and there. After that trip camino, we stopped in Porto, Portugal and toured that wonderful city.
So I return with anticipation to Portugal, walking northward through its beautiful countryside and coast line. I will stop in Fatima to pray and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the visions of the children and town. The Pope will be visiting, but my visit will be two weeks before his arrival.
In the meantime, here are some of the reflections leading up to this Caminho Portugues.
